City of _________________________________: stop spraying toxic chemicals
Did you know that _____________________’s parks, athletic fields, sidewalks, trails and greenbelts are frequently sprayed with toxic pesticides? These pesticides have been shown to lower IQ, cause cancer, damage developing reproductive organs and cause other significant harm.
Every infant born today carries a chemical body burden passed from mother to child during pregnancy. This burden will mostly grow throughout a lifetime of exposure to chemicals in food, air, water and everyday products.
Scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention measure pesticides and other chemicals in the bodies of Americans every few years. In the most recent study, CDC tested for 212 chemicals, including 44 pesticides — and found most of them.
Even in tiny doses, many chemicals can derail the delicate systems that control our development, health and reproduction. From conception through puberty, children are especially vulnerable.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “epidemiologic evidence demonstrates associations between early life exposure to pesticides and pediatric cancers, decreased cognitive function, and behavioral problems.” They say that there is no safe level of pesticide exposure for children.
You and your family can still be affected if chemicals are not sprayed on your street. Pesticides have been shown to drift for miles and persist in indoor carpet fibers for a year after they are tracked inside. The U.S. Geological Survey found that, “After they are applied, many pesticides volatilize into the lower atmosphere, a process that can continue for days, weeks, or months after the application, depending on the compound. In addition, pesticides can become airborne attached to wind-blown dust.”
